I'd been wanting to try Colmans 'famous' fish and chips for quite some time but just hadn't got round to visiting South Shields. Colmans is considered to be the UK's Number One Fish and Chip Restaurant. They're so famous that they've even served their fish and chips to the Queen!
It was a Sunday, a day where nothing much usually happens. However, the sun was shining and I refused to spend the day cooped up in our flat doing nothing. I managed to persuade Katie to take a trip to South Shields with me. I say persuade but quite frankly it didn't take much, all I had to do was mention the words fish and chips and Pimms. We set off to South Shields with a bag filled with; a rug, a litre bottle of Pimms, lemonade, a Pimms jug, plastic cups and a bag of chopped fruit. Talk about being prepared.
Colmans is ideally located, situated between the metro station and the beach. We ordered two portions of cod and chips and a portion of scampi. It wasn't cheap. However, the portion size was generous to say the least. I had one whole piece of cod and near enough half of another piece. I have NEVER tasted fish and chips or scampi like it. They were unbelievably good! You can taste the quality which is down to the fact that Colmans use sustainable, fresh and locally sourced fish. The batter wasn't greasy but perfectly light and crispy. I liked the way it came served in a sturdy box, on which nutritional information was printed, with a slice of lemon. The chips were really good too, they weren't greasy or soggy.
We sat on the beach in the sunshine tucking into our fish and chips and drinking Pimms out of plastic cups. All in March! I felt very British.
